Does Germany Have a Fixed Foundation Depth?

No — German building law sets no fixed frost-line depth. Here's DIN 1054's 0.80 m baseline, why the real depth is site-determined under Eurocode 7, and what is (and isn't) fixed for the concrete.

No. Germany has no fixed national foundation depth. DIN 1054 gives 0.80 m below finished ground level as a baseline. That is a starting point, not a minimum for the whole country. The real depth comes from the ground itself. It is worked out under DIN EN 1997-1 (Eurocode 7) with DIN 1054, from a soil check on your site.

On real jobs, depths mostly run 0.80–1.50 m. Easy, well-drained ground sits at the shallow end. Cold and upland regions dig deeper, because frost reaches further down. Parts of Bavaria are like that. No one figure fits all sites. Any source quoting one flat number for Germany is guessing. Get the soil checked. Then dig to the depth the report calls for.

Width and thickness work the same way. Strip footing width comes from a design check. The check weighs the soil’s bearing capacity against the load from the wall above. That sits under Eurocode 7 and DIN 1054. Thickness is a structural design call. Neither has a fixed code minimum for a normal house.

The concrete follows suit. No single grade is set in the code. Eurocode 2 (DIN EN 1992-1-1) picks the grade by exposure class. Foundation concrete touching soil mostly lands around C20/25 to C25/30. That is a design choice for your site’s exposure class, not a code minimum. Rebar cover works the same way. It comes from Eurocode 2’s exposure-class table. There is no one figure to quote. Get it from the engineer’s design, not a generic number.

Work it out on site

The depth is a soil-report call. The width is a design call. Once you know both, the concrete volume is plain maths. It feeds straight into the calculator. Say you have a strip foundation to pour. These are example numbers, not code minimums. Your real width and depth come off your soil report:

  • Total length of trench: 26 m
  • Foundation width: 0.50 m (example only; set by your design for the ground and load)
  • Foundation depth: 1.0 m (example only; from your soil report, against the DIN 1054 0.80 m baseline)

Volume = length × width × depth:

26 × 0.50 × 1.0 = 13.0 m³

So order about 13 cubic metres. Then add a bit for spillage and an uneven trench. Most builders tack on 5 to 10 per cent. Swap in your own numbers and the calculator does the sum.
