The requirement
No Landesbauordnung sets a wet-room waterproofing figure. The rules sit in one standard instead: DIN 18534, “Abdichtung von Innenräumen” (sealing of inside rooms). That standard is listed on the Bauregelliste, Germany’s list of approved building rules. The listing makes it close to binding. Skip it and you carry a real legal risk.
Why does that listing matter? Building law in Germany sits with the Länder. All 16 state building laws lean on the Bauregelliste. A rule on the list counts as meeting the building code. The Länder laws do cover room height, natural light and ventilation (see the room-height page below). They say nothing about shower or wet-room membrane detail. For that, they point to DIN 18534.
Compare Australia. AS 3740 is plainly optional under the NCC. DIN 18534 carries far more weight than that. Treat it as the rule book for wet rooms.

DIN 18534 replaced the older DIN 18195 series for inside rooms in 2017. It has been revised since, most recently in October 2025. Always check you hold the current edition.
Where the actual numbers live
DIN 18534 is a paid standard. DIN publishes it and sells it through Beuth Verlag. The full text cannot be reprinted here. The UK’s BS 5385-1 and France’s NF DTU 52.2 carry the same limit. The paid text holds the real detail. Which water-exposure class fits which room and floor build-up. Which membrane systems meet each class. How upstands and junctions get detailed. This page does not repeat any of that.
One idea is worth knowing. Do not treat it as a figure to build to. DIN 18534 rates wet areas partly by a “Bemessungswasserstand”. That means a design water level. It is a depth of standing water the seal must hold back. It is not one flat wall height. The NCC’s 1800 mm shower-wall figure works as one flat height. The German standard does not.
Trade guides often quote a design level of about 10 cm for a normal home wet room. That is a rough figure from summaries of the standard. We have not checked it against the current DIN 18534-1 text. So treat it as background only. Never design or inspect to it. Follow the class rules and figures in the standard itself.
What this means on site
The binding detail sits in a paid standard on the Bauregelliste. So on site:
- Get the current DIN 18534 parts for your job. Buy them through Beuth Verlag or your trade body. Never work from a secondhand summary or a figure quoted online.
- Set the water-exposure class first. Work it out for your room and substrate, using the classes in DIN 18534-1. Then pick a membrane system from Parts 2–6.
- Follow the membrane maker’s system exactly. That means how it goes on, the primer, the upstand heights, and the junction and drain details. Match it all to your DIN 18534 class.
- Keep the paperwork. Record the DIN 18534 class and part you worked to. Keep the product data sheet and proof of a correct install. Land building offices check work against rules on the Bauregelliste. This is your compliance record.
