The requirement
The key number is 72 inches (1829 mm). Bathtub and shower floors need a nonabsorbent finish. So do shower walls, and tub walls where there is an installed showerhead. The finish must reach 72 in (1829 mm) above the floor. That is IRC 2021, Section R307.2 “Bathtub and shower spaces”.
Nonabsorbent means the surface will not soak up water. Tile, solid surface, or a fiberglass or acrylic tub-shower unit all count. Bare drywall does not. In a shower without a curb, measure the height from the drain inlet, not the floor.

What sits behind the tile
A nonabsorbent finish is only as good as its base. If you are tiling, IRC R702.4 sets the backer.
- Cement, fiber-cement or glass-mat gypsum backer board is the approved base for tile in a tub or shower area. It must conform to ASTM C1178, C1288 or C1396.
- Water-resistant gypsum backing board (“greenboard”) is not permitted where it sees direct water exposure or continuous high humidity. So it cannot sit under the tile inside the shower or tub enclosure. Further from the water, it is fine as backing.
What about a membrane under the tile? Neither R307.2 nor R702.4 requires one. Sheet or liquid-applied waterproofing behind the tile is common trade practice. Tile setters and warranty providers expect it more and more. But that push comes from the TCNA Handbook and the maker’s instructions. It is not written into these IRC sections.
What the code doesn’t set
The IRC does not give you a full waterproofing spec. Know these two gaps before you assume more cover than the code gives.
- No basin or vanity splash height. R307.2 covers bathtub and shower floors and walls only. There is no IRC number for the wall behind a basin or vanity.
- No membrane spec. The code sets the finish and the backer. It does not mandate a specific waterproofing membrane behind either one.
On site — what to check
- Measure up 72 in (1829 mm). Start at the shower floor or drain inlet. At a bathtub, start at the tub floor wherever there is an installed showerhead. The nonabsorbent finish must reach that line.
- Check the backer before you tile. Use cement, fiber-cement or glass-mat gypsum board (ASTM C1178/C1288/C1396). Never use plain or water-resistant gypsum board inside the wet zone.
- Check local amendments. Some places extend the 72 in height. Some require a specific membrane, or point straight at the TCNA Handbook. Ask your building department before you order materials.
- Basins and vanities sit outside R307.2. Follow trade practice, or the tile and membrane maker’s instructions, for splash protection there.

- Adoption caveat: The IRC is a model code. It has no force of law until a state or town adopts it, and adopted editions in force range from 2015 to 2024 depending on jurisdiction, often with local amendments. California, Wisconsin, New York City and Chicago run their own codes instead of the IRC. R307.2’s nonabsorbent-finish requirement and 72 in height have been stable across recent editions, but always confirm the locally adopted edition and amendments — and whether your jurisdiction has added a membrane or extent requirement on top — with your building department before you build.
